Students within the Art & Art History Program are encouraged to expand their learning through independent scholarship in art history or studio art. Departmental Honors allows students to undertake an intensive self-initiated project under the guidance of a faculty advisor.
Past Honors Projects include:
- Stephen Campbell '11, Dialogue of Forms 1, a hand-drawn animated film created in collaboration with a musical composition by LVC music major Caleb Brown '11.
- Rachel Eck '11, "The Hospitable Earth: Humans as an Ecological Expression in the Pastoral Imagery of Samuel Palmer," an extensive art history paper.
The opportunity to work independently at a high level of achievement is an invaluable form of scholarship and professional preparation. According to Rachel Eck, her honors work in art history prepared her for a post-graduate internship (Summer 2011) at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where she was assigned a project that "required abstract thinking, autonomous field research...and the ability to attend meetings and communicate with department heads" within the museum. These skills, Eck states, "were fostered and developed by the Art & Art History Department at LVC."
Students wishing to be considered for Departmental Honors must have an overall GPA of 3.30 and a department GPA of 3.5. Inquiries should be made to the student's academic advisor within the department.
