Mathematics with a Difference
Learning mathematics at Lebanon Valley College is different. A unique combination of friendly atmosphere, dedication to high academic expectations, many students studying mathematics, and faculty who care about you and your future make this a special place. These characteristics resulted in the Mathematical Sciences Department at LVC to be profiled by the Mathematical Association of America in its publication, Models that Work.
The mathematical sciences program at Lebanon Valley College continues to defy national trends by attracting a large number of majors. Currently, mathematics, actuarial science, and computer science majors constitute seven percent of the student body, compared to a national average of less than two percent of students studying in departments of mathematical sciences.
At Lebanon Valley College, as a mathematics, actuarial science, or computer science student, you will begin your math career with courses in analysis/calculus and mathematical reasoning. Being in these classes with the other students interested in the mathematical sciences at the beginning of your college mathematics career is a unique and vital ingredient in the special character of your mathematics education at LVC.
After LVC
We recognize that our graduates desire and expect education that will lead to employment after graduation. Employers continue to recognize the quality and careful preparation of graduates of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Lebanon Valley College. A significant majority of our graduates have continued on for further education or secured jobs in work related to their major studies. After landing good jobs, our graduates have the skills to distinguish themselves in their careers. Most recently the Casualty Actuary Society elected Thomas G. Myers (Class of 1983) President for 2006.
Mathematical science graduates regularly find employment in actuarial and computer work, teaching, and business. Nearly 100 percent of our actuarial science graduates have actuarial positions by graduation. A substantial number of mathematics majors as well as computer science graduates pursue careers as programmers, analysts, and application consultants. Students preparing for work in secondary education find improved salaries and varied opportunities. Mathematics majors with course work in economics and business find careers in management, many in banking and finance.
LVC also provides outstanding preparation for graduate and law school. Recently, graduates of the Department of Mathematical Sciences have attended Lehigh University, Pepperdine Law School, the University of Virginia, and William and Mary, among others, for graduate study in computer science, law, mathematics, and operations research.
I invite you to look us over. You will find that Lebanon Valley College offers a stimulating, challenging, and rewarding opportunity for education in the mathematical sciences.
