Innovation: Redefining Educational Boundaries

As a recipient of one of the first President’s Innovation Fund grants, Dr. Robert Valgenti, associate professor of philosophy, makes the College’s dining hall central to LVC’S mission. He has worked with students to launch E.A.T. (Engage, Analyze, Transform), an interdisciplinary research group that transforms the College cafeteria into a shared, intellectual environment for learning, experimentation, and the exchange of ideas. 

Students conducting independent research projects with Valgenti develop initiatives that critically examine food and eating, while promoting the goals of ethical reasoning, understanding of diversity, and environmental stewardship.

“Each student will be responsible for introducing their initiative in a way that is empowering,” Valgenti said.
“This will complete the circle and bring the curriculum, and College mission, into the place where students spend most of their time outside of the classroom and residence halls.”

“The faculty of Lebanon Valley College continually innovate, trying new interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches, and building student research into their work,” said President Lewis E. Thayne, Ph.D. “These Innovation Fund grants put additional resources behind our very entrepreneurial faculty and staff.”

Your support of the President's Innovation Fund provides additional resources for interdisciplinary, collaborative, and entrepreneurial approaches to teaching.

In 2012-2013, 13 grants totaling $100,000 were awarded to  LVC faculty, thanks to a gift from the estate of Yvonne L. Raab '45. Additional support is necessary to continue these grants, as the initial estate gift has been disbursed.
