Jennifer Thornsberry ’14
Biology Lab Technician
Jen Thornsberry is a true specialist, coordinating the Biology lab, advising the Biology Club, and teaching classes, including a First-Year Experience course and both 100-level Biology labs. In fact, she recently received the College’s top award for a part-time or adjunct faculty member, the Nevelyn J. Knisley Award. Oh, and she oversees the LVC Greenhouse.
Jennifer’s versatility is reflected in her education, which includes Bachelor’s in Biology (from dear old LVC) and Professional Writing and Master’s in Education and Biology.
She arrived at The Valley as a Biology major, and the lab job opened right before graduating and she’s never left.
“Although I run the greenhouse and hire the student lab assistants, I was particularly excited about the position because I’ve always wanted to teach, so this opportunity provides the best of both.
“It’s worked out better than I could have expected, with Biology majors dubbing me “mom.” They love to hang out in my office, so I get to know them personally, which helps us connect when I have them in class. The best part is how great they are about keeping in touch to let me know how they are doing in graduate or medical school, even inviting me to their weddings and sending me baby pictures.”
Jennifer is a self-described “book nerd” with over 20 escape rooms completed successfully in her history. She and her daughter, an LVC student, and son, a future Dutchman, love family game nights, live sporting events, and playing with their dog, three cats, leopard gecko, and bearded dragon.
“My favorite part about working at LVC is developing relationships with our students. It isn’t just a four-year relationship with some; it’s much longer and more meaningful.”
