Data Science

The modern economy runs on data. Earning a bachelor’s degree in data science from LVC is the key to many fulfilling and exciting careers, from medical science to shopping analytics. To succeed, organizations and medical sciences must have tools to collect and organize data, then build software systems that apply models to that data to find patterns and make informed predictions about the future. Our Data Science Program develops technical expertise while also emphasizing flexibility and foundational skills that will enable you to adapt to new technologies and paradigms long after graduation.

Learn More About the Program

The LVC Data Science Program leverages the faculty’s decades-long expertise in mathematics, actuarial science, and computer science. Along the way, students learn to use industry-standard tools for collecting and managing data. The result is an interdisciplinary major that prepares graduates to take jobs in this rapidly growing field.

A Forward-Thinking DS Degree for the New Data Economy

Students in LVC’s Data Science major build a strong foundation in math, stats, and coding–skills that open doors to a wide range of data-driven careers. They explore machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to build software systems trained to use data to see patterns that humans cannot.

Data science powers the tools behind artificial intelligence, machine learning, and predictive analytics. Here are a few everyday examples of how it’s being used today:

  • Programs that help doctors spot signs of disease in MRI scans earlier and more accurately
  • Shopping apps that recommend products based on what people like and buy
  • Smart robots that organize warehouses to save time and money
  • Self-driving car systems that learn from experience to drive more safely
  • Finance tools that use current trends to help businesses make smarter decisions

Choose Your Focus: Data Science Major

Are you more interested in the programming side of things? Find the theory particularly engaging? Do you want to focus on business analytics and risk assessment? We’ve designed our data science major to be combined with our computer sciencemathematics, or actuarial science majors in flexible ways, providing students with the ability to customize their program. What’s more, we’ve built the program so that you can decide on these combinations in your first couple of years at LVC and still finish with what you want on time.

In Their Words

I majored in Data Science to strengthen my analytical skills; the program provides practical experience with real data and equips me with the tools necessary for making data-driven decisions, which complements my other major perfectly.
