Computer and Data Science Camp Schedule

During a typical day, students work in teams to learn some relevant Python and math to investigate a data science problem. The primary emphasis is on problem solving and effective communication. On most days, an LVC alumna visits the class to discuss her job in the software development and/or data science fields. In the evenings, students participate in supervised activities with curfew at 10 p.m.

Daily activities are organized around a specific problem in data science. Below is a sample schedule for a typical camp day.

Sample Day 

8–9 a.m. – Breakfast in the Allan W. Mund College Center 

9–10:15 a.m. – Relevant Python Coding 

You’ll focus on learning some Python coding techniques relevant to the day’s data science problem. 

10:15–10:30 a.m. – Break 

10:30 a.m.–12 p.m. – Intro to a Data Science Problem 

You’ll learn about an interesting problem in data science, and then get to work on the problem in teams. 

12–1 p.m. – Lunch 

1–2:15 p.m. – Guest Software Developer or Data Scientist 

You’ll hear from an LVC alumna who is working in software development or data science about her job and what she did to prepare for it. 

2:15–2:30 p.m. – Break 

2:30–4 p.m. – Q&A about Guest Visit/Discussion on Data Science Problem 

After discussing the guest visit, you and your team will present your results on the day’s data science problem.  You’ll also get to hear from the other teams.
