ANDREW BENDER (1906) & RUTH ENGLE BENDER (1915) SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC AND CHEMISTRY

Dr. Andrew Bender earned his degree from LVC in 1906 and served on the chemistry faculty from 1921-1951, including time as department chair. Ruth Engle Bender graduated from the College in 1915, joined the music department faculty in 1918, served as director of the College’s conservatory of music, and taught music theory and piano until 1971.

Paul W. Hess Endowed Scholarship

The Paul W. Hess Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in biology. Retired U.S. Navy Captain Dr. Paul W. Hess joined the faculty in 1961 and served as chair of the biology department.

Karl Lockwood Undergraduate Research Fund

The Karl Lockwood Undergraduate Research Fund is awarded to undergraduate student/faculty research on matters related to enzymes associated with in-born errors of metabolism in children. Dr. Karl Lockwood was an associate professor of chemistry.

Neidig Chemistry Funds

1943 graduate of Lebanon Valley College, Dr. H. Anthony Neidig, served as chair of the chemistry department until 1985. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the College in 2004.

Neidig Chemistry Scholarships Fund

The Neidig Chemistry Scholarships Fund is awarded to three students majoring in chemistry or biochemistry during their sophomore, junior, and senior years. It is renewable for up to four years.

Neidig Chemistry Research Fund

The Neidig Chemistry Research Fund is awarded to chemistry faculty and chemistry student research.

GERALD J. PETROFES SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR EDUCATION AND BIOLOGY MAJORS

The Gerald J. Petrofes Scholarship Fund is awarded to students who demonstrate good character, good academic standing, and financial need with preference given to education and biology majors. Gerald Petrofes is associate professor emeritus of physical education and a teacher-coach at Lebanon Valley College for 25 years before retiring in 1988.

The Rhodes and O’Donnell Physics Research Fund is awarded to support physics student and faculty research. Dr. Jacob L. Rhodes ’43 and Professor J. Robert O’Donnell were faculty emeriti members of the physics department.

SUSAN E. VERHOEK AND STEPHEN E. WILLIAMS PRIZE IN PLANT SCIENCE

The Susan E. Verhoek and Stephen E. Williams Prize in Plant Science is awarded to a graduating senior biology major (or chemistry or physics) who has excelled in the studies of plant science (such as botany, plant phsiology, plant ecology, etc.). Drs. Verhoek and Williams are professors emeritus of biology, with research interests in molecular biology, physiology, and botany.

The Paul L. Wolf Biology Research Fund is awarded to biology student and faculty research. Dr. Paul Wolf is professor emeritus of biology. He joined the faculty in 1966 and served as long-time chair of the department.
