Medical Humanities Program Mission, Goal, & Objectives

The Medical Humanities major challenges students to recognize the connections between social problems and medicine. We seek to empower our graduates to understand healthcare in its social context, meet patients in their cultural context, and contribute to improving healthcare in our civic context.

 

Program Goal 1: Students will be capable communicators.

  • Articulate insights into own cultural rules and biases and how one’s culture shapes one’s world views
  • Demonstrate compelling analytical and persuasive writing across the liberal arts

 

Program Goal 2: Students will possess a foundational knowledge of the natural sciences.

  • Demonstrate familiarity with scientific knowledge broadly and fundamental laboratory processes
  • Articulate the ways that scientific inquiry contributes to and addresses social problems

 

Program Goal 3: Students will be prepared for careers and/or professional training.

  • Demonstrate self-awareness of one’s skills, capacities, and goals in the broader social context
  • Develop and refine plans for being a productive professional and citizen
