Dr. Brandy Leininger arrived at The Valley this summer as our new Director of Service & Community Engagement. Learn more about her and what she has planned for LVC in this short Q&A! Students can meet Brandy during Step Into Service sessions and an Open House during the first week of classes, or stop by her office in the Engle Family Lobby of Miller Chapel.
What was a personally impactful service experience for you?
I was blessed to serve as a mentor for Homes of Hope in Lancaster County, a transitional housing program that supports families with school-aged children. Through life coaching, we worked to make strides in budgeting and career goals. I loved serving as a support for families that just needed someone on their side to help get through some hard times, and I appreciate the friendships made along the way.
What are you looking forward to most at LVC?
I am excited to share with students how service is a pathway to gaining leadership skills, building relationships with peers, finding a place of belonging on campus, and learning how they can impact their communities.
What are your hopes/goals for service at The Valley?
In addition to engaging students in service opportunities on and around campus, I hope to collaborate with faculty to expand intentional community-based education to enhance students’ learning, while contributing to community needs through real-world experiences.
What do you enjoy most about working in higher education?
Being on a college campus invigorates me. The micro-community of faculty and staff, with our alumni and community partners, working together to help prepare students for life, makes me feel like I’m making a difference. I had a few key mentors who I owe so much for their encouragement and getting me through my school years (including through my doctorate!) and some very hard times. Being in higher ed gives me a chance to give back to other students in the same way.
